The Greene County Ram girls basketball team played a good 16 minutes of basketball, but it takes a good 32 minutes to win a basketball game. The Rams outscored the Gilbert Tigers in the second half of a home game Tuesday in Jefferson, but they couldn’t overcome a 19 point deficit from the first half. At the midpoint of the game, the Tigers led 34-15. The final margin was 15 points, with the Tigers winning 56-41.
Ram senior Stacy Mears scored all seven of the Rams’ first quarter points, making a 3-point shot and two field goals. In the quarter, the Rams took only seven shots at 2-point range and four shots at 3-point range. Kayla Mobley, who often is the Rams’ leading scorer, was able to put up the ball only once in the first quarter.
The Rams’ second quarter points came as two field goals by Mobley and one each for seniors Tressa Rasumussen and Marissa Promes. Their field goal percentage was 44; they took only nine shots from 2-point range and three from 3-point range.
By comparison, the Tigers attempted 30 field goals and six 3-point shots during the first half. For the game, the Tigers had 50 field goal attempts and the Rams had 34.
Mobley scored four points in the second and third quarters and six points in the fourth quarter to lead the Rams in scoring at 14. Mears finished the game with 10 points. Rasmussen scored five points, Promes and Hannah Onken each scored four points, Jolee Wessling scored three and Kenna Marquardt scored one point.
Coach Chad Morton said he was happy with the second half efforts of the team, and he noted the excellent play of the Tigers’ Paige Hoiberg.
The Rams girls are now 4-2 in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference and 4-3 overall.
